The range of design choices for sintered metal components is broad, and the areas of application are expanded continually.
Whether the powder metal component is manufactured in steel, stainless steel, bronze or in soft magnetic materials is often determined by the design and end usage of the component. Our powder metal components are often used in mechanical applications – but powder metal components are, in fact, used in everything from transmissions and fastenings to electromagnetic products.
In collaboration with our customers, we continually discover new applications for sintered metal parts and new benefits and advantages from the process. Do not hesitate to contact us if you have questions concerning choice of material for your component.
Steel
Steel alloys are the materials most commonly used in manufacturing sintered metal components.
The many options for alloying the pure iron powder entail that materials can be modified to offer the specific properties required by the customer.
The strength normally attributed to solid steel can also be achieved with sintered metal.
Stainless steel
FJ Sintermetal uses several types of powder to manufacture stainless steel sintered components.
A selection of your options can be seen below.
316 An austenitic and non-magnetic stainless steel powder with high corrosion resistance and strong mechanical properties. The most commonly used powder.
410 A martensitic, ferro-magnetic stainless steel powder that can become extremely hard and therefore has good wear resistance.
430 A ferrittic stainless steel powder with enhanced magnetic and corrosion resistant properties, compared to 410. Used for applications where there is a need for corrosion resistance and magnetic properties.
Bronze
Sintered bronze is mainly used for bronze bearings, but due to the applicability of the frictional properties of the material, it has many other areas of use.
Items made of sintered bronze are often calibrated and can therefore be manufactured to tolerances as low as tolerance grade IT6.
Soft magnetic materials
Sintered metal can be used to great advantage for applications that require soft magnetic properties, such as magnetic cores or other products that have electromagnetic components.
Sintered metal adds a number of advantages to these types of applications, in areas such as: design, uniformity, quality, and price.
